So then, ¹  God ²  has mercy on whom he chooses to have mercy, and he hardens whom he chooses to harden. ³ 

For I do not do the good I want, but I do the very evil I do not want!

He answered, ¹  “I told you already and you didn’t listen. ²  Why do you want to hear it ³  again? You people ⁴  don’t want to become his disciples too, do you?”

And if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah, who is to come.

Although ¹  Herod ²  wanted to kill John, ³  he feared the crowd because they accepted John as a prophet.

and whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave ¹  –

He said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?”

and whoever wants to be first among you must be the slave ¹  of all.

So ¹  they made signs to the baby’s ²  father, ³  inquiring what he wanted to name his son. ⁴ 

Treat others ¹  in the same way that you would want them to treat you. ² 

“I have come ¹  to bring ²  fire on the earth – and how I wish it were already kindled!

“What do you want me to do for you?” He replied, ¹  “Lord, let me see again.” ² 

They ¹  said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare ²  it?”

Pilate addressed them once again because he wanted ¹  to release Jesus.

but you are not willing to come to me so that you may have life.

So Jesus said to the twelve, “You don’t want to go away too, do you?” ¹ 

You don’t want to kill me the way you killed the Egyptian yesterday, do you?’ ¹ 

But if I do what I don’t want, I agree that the law is good. ¹ 

So then, ¹  it does not depend on human desire or exertion, ²  but on God who shows mercy.

What do you want? Shall I come to you with a rod of discipline ¹  or with love and a spirit of gentleness?
