But it is you, ¹  a man like me, ²  my close friend in whom I confided. ³ 

Do not turn to the spirits of the dead and do not seek familiar spirits ¹  to become unclean by them. I am the Lord your God.

My kinsmen have failed me; my friends ¹  have forgotten me. ² 

Even my close friend ¹  whom I trusted, he who shared meals with me, has turned against me. ² 

because you are especially ¹  familiar with all the customs and controversial issues ²  of the Jews. Therefore I ask ³  you to listen to me patiently.

“‘The person who turns to the spirits of the dead and familiar spirits ²  to commit prostitution by going after them, I will set my face ³  against that person and cut him off from the midst of his people.

“‘A man or woman who ¹  has in them a spirit of the dead or a familiar spirit ²  must be put to death. They must pelt them with stones; ³  their blood guilt is on themselves.’”

Hiram sent his fleet and some of his sailors, who were well acquainted with the sea, to serve with Solomon’s men. ¹ 

For all of them, ¹  the morning is to them like deep darkness; they are friends with the terrors of darkness.

The Egyptians will panic, ¹  and I will confuse their strategy. ²  They will seek guidance from the idols and from the spirits of the dead, from the pits used to conjure up underworld spirits, and from the magicians. ³ 

one who casts spells, ¹  one who conjures up spirits, ²  a practitioner of the occult, ³  or a necromancer. ⁴ 

I am your servant. Give me insight, so that I can understand ¹  your rules.

So Saul instructed his servants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, ¹  so that I may go to her and inquire of her.” His servants replied to him, “There is a woman who is a medium in Endor.”

¹ They will say to you, “Seek oracles at the pits used to conjure up underworld spirits, from the magicians who chirp and mutter incantations. ²  Should people not seek oracles from their gods, by asking the dead about the destiny of the living?” ³ 

For the king knows about these things, and I am speaking freely ¹  to him, ²  because I cannot believe ³  that any of these things has escaped his notice, ⁴  for this was not done in a corner. ⁵ 

All my closest friends ¹  detest me; and those whom ²  I love have turned against me. ³ 

You cause my friends and neighbors to keep their distance; ¹  those who know me leave me alone in the darkness. ² 

You carefully observe me when I travel or when I lie down to rest; ¹  you are aware of everything I do. ² 

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor’ ¹  and ‘hate your enemy.’

so that we may not be exploited ¹  by Satan (for we are not ignorant of his schemes).
