Then the chief priests of the Jews ¹  said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The king of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am king of the Jews.’”

The Jewish leaders ¹  picked up rocks again to stone him to death.

(Now the Jewish feast of the Passover ¹  was near.) ² 

For the Jews there was radiant happiness and joyous honor. ¹ 

Now ¹  at that time certain ²  Chaldeans came forward and brought malicious accusations against ³  the Jews.

They began to salute him: “Hail, king of the Jews!” ¹ 

The inscription ¹  of the charge against him read, “The king of the Jews.”

and saying, “If ¹  you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!”

Now there were devout Jews ¹  from every nation under heaven residing in Jerusalem. ² 

He addressed ¹  both Jews and Greeks in the synagogue ²  every Sabbath, attempting to persuade ³  them.

The Jews also joined in the verbal attack, ¹  claiming ²  that these things were true.

even us, whom he has called, not only from the Jews but also from the Gentiles?

For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom,

Five times I received from the Jews forty lashes less one. ¹ 

We are Jews by birth ¹  and not Gentile sinners, ² 

In Susa the citadel the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.

Now after some days had passed, the Jews plotted ¹  together to kill him,

Now the Jewish feast of Tabernacles ¹  was near. ² 

They ¹  came up to him again and again ²  and said, “Hail, king of the Jews!” ³  And they struck him repeatedly ⁴  in the face.

Or is God the God of the Jews only? Is he not the God of the Gentiles too? Yes, of the Gentiles too!
