The Edomites had again invaded and defeated Judah and carried off captives.

This is the account of Esau, the father ¹  of the Edomites, in the hill country of Seir.

Abishai son of Zeruiah ¹  killed 18,000 Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

He placed garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s subjects. The Lord protected ¹  David wherever he campaigned. ²

David became famous ¹  when he returned from defeating the Arameans ²  in the Valley of Salt, he defeated ³  18,000 in all.

He defeated ¹  10,000 Edomites in the Salt Valley; he captured Sela in battle and renamed it Joktheel, a name it has retained to this very day.

You must not hate an Edomite, for he is your relative; ¹  you must not hate an Egyptian, for you lived as a foreigner ²  in his land.
