the jackdaw, ¹  the carrion vulture, the cormorant,

These are the ones you may not eat: the eagle, ¹  the vulture, ²  the black vulture, ³ 

“‘These you are to detest from among the birds – they must not be eaten, because they are detestable: ¹  the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,

Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures ¹  will gather. ² 

Then ¹  the disciples ²  said ³  to him, “Where, ⁴  Lord?” He replied to them, “Where the dead body ⁵  is, there the vultures ⁶  will gather.” ⁷ 

The eye ¹  that mocks at a father and despises obeying ²  a mother – the ravens of the valley will peck it out and the young vultures will eat it. ³ 

When birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.

the kite, the buzzard of any kind, ¹ 

the kite, the black kite, the dayyah ¹  after its species,

Sound the alarm! ¹  An eagle ²  looms over the temple of the Lord! For they have broken their covenant with me, ³  and have rebelled against my law.

The people I call my own attack me like birds of prey or like hyenas. ¹  But other birds of prey are all around them. ²  Let all the nations gather together like wild beasts. Let them come and destroy these people I call my own. ³ 

he wanders about – food for vultures; ¹  he knows that the day of darkness is at hand. ² 

a hidden path ¹  no bird of prey knows – no falcon’s ²  eye has spotted it.

Their horses are faster than leopards and more alert ¹  than wolves in the desert. ²  Their horses ³  gallop, ⁴  their horses come a great distance; like a vulture ⁵  they swoop down quickly to devour their prey. ⁶ 

I am like an owl ¹  in the wilderness; I am like a screech owl ²  among the ruins. ³ 

Owls ¹  will make nests and lay eggs ²  there; they will hatch them and protect them. ³  Yes, hawks ⁴  will gather there, each with its mate.

I will hand them over to their enemies who want to kill them. Their dead bodies will become food for the birds and the wild animals. ¹ 

May the creditor seize ¹  all he owns! May strangers loot his property! ² 

Then the dead bodies of these people will be left on the ground for the birds and wild animals to eat. ¹  There will not be any survivors to scare them away.
