For ¹  wrath kills the foolish person, ²  and anger ³  slays the silly one.

“Oh, ¹  if only my grief ²  could be weighed, ³  and my misfortune laid ⁴  on the scales too! ⁵ 

For with great wisdom comes ¹  great frustration; whoever increases his ²  knowledge merely ³  increases his ⁴  heartache.

Surely, he ate in darkness every day of his life, ¹  and he suffered greatly with sickness and anger.

What does a man acquire from all his labor and from the anxiety that accompanies his toil on earth? ¹ 

For all day long ¹  his work produces pain and frustration, ²  and even at night his mind cannot relax! ³  This also is futile!

Look, my servants will shout for joy as happiness fills their hearts! ¹  But you will cry out as sorrow fills your hearts; ²  you will wail because your spirits will be crushed. ³ 

You have taken notice, ¹  for ²  you always see ³  one who inflicts pain and suffering. ⁴  The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you; ⁵  you deliver ⁶  the fatherless. ⁷ 

It is better to live ¹  in a desert land ²  than with a quarrelsome and easily-provoked ³  woman.

for their hearts contemplate violence, and their lips speak harm. ¹ 

Don’t consider your servant a wicked woman, ¹  for until now I have spoken from my deep pain and anguish.”

You bring new witnesses ¹  against me, and increase your anger against me; relief troops ²  come against me.

Banish ¹  emotional stress ²  from your mind. ³  and put away pain ⁴  from your body; ⁵  for youth ⁶  and the prime of life ⁷  are fleeting. ⁸ 

My eyes have grown dim ¹  with grief; my whole frame ²  is but a shadow.

he plots evil with perverse thoughts ¹  in his heart, he spreads contention ²  at all times.

A fool’s annoyance ¹  is known at once, ²  but the prudent ³  overlooks ⁴  an insult.

In the house ¹  of the righteous is abundant wealth, ²  but the income of the wicked brings trouble. ³ 

A stone is heavy and sand is weighty, but vexation ¹  by a fool is more burdensome ²  than the two of them.

I reflected on everything that is accomplished by man ¹  on earth, ²  and I concluded: Everything ³  he has accomplished ⁴  is futile ⁵  – like chasing the wind! ⁶ 

Better is one handful with some rest than two hands full of toil ¹  and chasing the wind.
