(Now the men ¹  who were traveling with him stood there speechless, ²  because they heard the voice but saw no one.) ³ 

And he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But he had nothing to say. ¹ 

While he was saying this to me, ¹  I was flat on ²  the ground and unable to speak.

When ¹  he came out, he was not able to speak to them. They ²  realized that he had seen a vision ³  in the holy place, ⁴  because ⁵  he was making signs to them and remained unable to speak. ⁶ 

When the godly see this, they rejoice, and every sinner ¹  shuts his mouth.

My body ¹  trembles ²  because I fear you; ³  I am afraid of your judgments.

Now when they heard this they were stunned, ¹  and they left him and went away.

After ¹  the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. So ²  they kept silent and told no one ³  at that time ⁴  anything of what they had seen.

You know that when you were pagans you were often led astray by speechless idols, however you were led.

yet was rebuked ¹  for his own transgression (a dumb donkey, ²  speaking with a human voice, ³  restrained the prophet’s madness). ⁴ 

“Indeed, I am completely unworthy ¹  – how could I reply to you? I put ²  my hand over my mouth to silence myself. ³ 

Open your mouth ¹  on behalf of those unable to speak, ²  for the legal rights of all the dying. ³ 

But the Lord is in his majestic palace. ¹  The whole earth is speechless in his presence!” ² 

As ¹  they were going away, ²  a man who could not talk and was demon-possessed was brought to him.

So ¹  the child’s ²  father ³  and mother were amazed ⁴  at what was said about him.

Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?” His brothers could not answer him because they were dumbfounded before him.

What good ¹  is an idol? Why would a craftsman make it? ²  What good is a metal image that gives misleading oracles? ³  Why would its creator place his trust in it ⁴  and make ⁵  such mute, worthless things?

The one who says to wood, ‘Wake up!’ is as good as dead ¹  – he who says ²  to speechless stone, ‘Awake!’ Can it give reliable guidance? ³  It is overlaid with gold and silver; it has no life’s breath inside it.

He watches over ¹  his holy ones, ²  but the wicked are made speechless in the darkness, for it is not by one’s own strength that one prevails.

When the wicked ¹  see this, they will worry; they will grind their teeth in frustration ²  and melt away; the desire of the wicked will perish. ³
