But they mocked God’s messengers, despised his warnings, ¹  and ridiculed his prophets. ²  Finally the Lord got very angry at his people and there was no one who could prevent his judgment. ³ 

What man is like Job, who ¹  drinks derision ²  like water!

We have had our fill ¹  of the taunts of the self-assured, of the contempt of the proud.

“How long will you simpletons ¹  love naiveté? ²  How long ³  will mockers ⁴  delight ⁵  in mockery ⁶  and fools ⁷  hate knowledge?

Above all, understand this: ¹  In the last days blatant scoffers ²  will come, being propelled by their own evil urges ³ 

You made us ¹  an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. ² 

This is how they will be repaid for their arrogance, ¹  for they taunted and verbally harassed ²  the people of the Lord who commands armies.

The Pharisees ¹  (who loved money) heard all this and ridiculed ²  him.

The people also stood there watching, but the rulers ridiculed ¹  him, saying, “He saved others. Let him save ²  himself if ³  he is the Christ ⁴  of God, his chosen one!”

Be careful that ¹  no one entices you with riches; do not let a large bribe ²  turn you aside.

When the godly see this, they will be filled with awe, and will mock the evildoer, saying: ¹ 

Now when they heard about ¹  the resurrection from the dead, some began to scoff, ²  but others said, “We will hear you again about this.”

For people ¹  will be lovers of themselves, ²  lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,

But Sarah noticed ¹  the son of Hagar the Egyptian – the son whom Hagar had borne to Abraham – mocking. ² 

We have become an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. ¹ 

Pay back our neighbors in full! ¹  May they be insulted the same way they insulted you, O Lord! ² 

Therefore, listen to the Lord’s word, you who mock, you rulers of these people who reside in Jerusalem! ¹ 

For he will be handed over ¹  to the Gentiles; he will be mocked, ²  mistreated, ³  and spat on. ⁴ 

Now ¹  the men who were holding Jesus ²  under guard began to mock him and beat him.

But Jeshurun ¹  became fat and kicked, you ²  got fat, thick, and stuffed! Then he deserted the God who made him, and treated the Rock who saved him with contempt.
