so is a person ¹  who deceives his neighbor, and says, “Was I not only joking?” ² 

You made us ¹  an object of ridicule ²  among the nations; foreigners treat us with contempt. ³ 

But others jeered at the speakers, ¹  saying, “They are drunk on new wine!” ² 

Neither should there be vulgar speech, foolish talk, or coarse jesting – all of which are out of character – but rather thanksgiving.

Then Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law who were going to marry his daughters. ¹  He said, “Quick, get out of this place because the Lord is about to destroy ²  the city!” But his sons-in-law thought he was ridiculing them. ³ 

A club is counted ¹  as a piece of straw; it laughs at the rattling of the lance.

The Lord laughs in disgust ¹  at them, for he knows that their day is coming. ² 

so ¹  I myself will laugh ²  when disaster strikes you, ³  I will mock when what you dread ⁴  comes,

Like a madman ¹  who shoots firebrands and deadly arrows, ² 

They are worthless, mere objects to be mocked. ¹  When the time comes to punish them, they will be destroyed.

I am ¹  a laughingstock ²  to my friends, ³  I, who called on God and whom he answered ⁴  – a righteous and blameless ⁵  man is a laughingstock!

But you, O Lord, laugh in disgust at them; ¹  you taunt ²  all the nations.

We have become an object of disdain to our neighbors; those who live on our borders taunt and insult us. ¹ 

You have made our neighbors dislike us, ¹  and our enemies insult us.

All who pass by ¹  have robbed him; he has become an object of disdain to his neighbors.

Your enemies, O Lord, hurl insults; they insult your chosen king as they dog his footsteps. ¹ 

I am disdained by them. ¹  When they see me, they shake their heads. ² 

because ¹  you neglected ²  all my advice, and did not comply ³  with my rebuke,

Carrying out a wicked scheme ¹  is enjoyable ²  to a fool, and so is wisdom for the one who has discernment. ³ 

If you do not obey me, ¹  then I will do to this temple what I did to Shiloh. ²  And I will make this city an example to be used in curses by people from all the nations on the earth.’”
