at the scent ¹  of water it will flourish ²  and put forth ³  shoots like a new plant.

On the vine there were three branches. As it budded, its blossoms opened and its clusters ripened into grapes.

The Lover to His Beloved: ¹  I went down to the orchard of walnut trees, ²  to look for the blossoms of the valley, ³  to see if the vines had budded or if the pomegranates were in bloom.

For before the harvest, when the bud has sprouted, and the ripening fruit appears, ¹  he will cut off the unproductive shoots ²  with pruning knives; he will prune the tendrils. ³ 

There I will make David strong; ¹  I have determined that my chosen king’s dynasty will continue. ² 

A shoot will grow out of Jesse’s ¹  root stock, a bud will sprout ²  from his roots.

When they sprout leaves, you see ¹  for yourselves and know that summer is now near.
