Then they said, “We’ll call the girl and find out what she wants to do.” ¹ 

We will seize ¹  all kinds ²  of precious wealth; we will fill our houses with plunder. ³ 

Now this is what we will do to Gibeah: We will attack the city as the lot dictates. ¹ 

Jonathan replied, “All right! ¹  We’ll go over to these men and fight them.

If we go into the city, we’ll die of starvation, ¹  and if we stay here we’ll die! So come on, let’s defect ²  to the Syrian camp! If they spare us, ³  we’ll live; if they kill us – well, we were going to die anyway.” ⁴ 

If you send ¹  our brother with us, we’ll go down and buy food for you.

Come now, let’s kill him, throw him into one of the cisterns, and then say that a wild ¹  animal ate him. Then we’ll see how his dreams turn out!” ² 

Then the king asked her, “What’s your problem?” She answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Hand over your son; we’ll eat him today and then eat my son tomorrow.’

Therefore encourage one another with these words.

And this is what we intend to do, ¹  if God permits.

If she is a wall, ¹  we will build on her a battlement ²  of silver; but if she is a door, we will barricade ³  her with boards ⁴  of cedar. ⁵ 

We will obey what the Lord our God to whom we are sending you tells us to do. It does not matter whether we like what he tells us or not. We will obey what he tells us to do so that things will go well for us.” ¹ 

“Out of our way!” ¹  they cried, and “This man came to live here as a foreigner, ²  and now he dares to judge us! ³  We’ll do more harm ⁴  to you than to them!” They kept ⁵  pressing in on Lot until they were close enough ⁶  to break down the door.

They will fall down, ¹  but we ²  will stand firm. ³ 

To ¹  learn ²  wisdom ³  and moral instruction, ⁴  and to discern ⁵  wise counsel. ⁶ 

This was the dream. Now we ¹  will set forth before the king its interpretation.

But we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word.”

They said to Moses, “You speak ¹  to us and we will listen, but do not let God speak with us, lest we die.”

He took the Book of the Covenant ¹  and read it aloud ²  to the people, and they said, “We are willing to do and obey ³  all that the Lord has spoken.”

They told Joshua, “We will do everything you say. We will go wherever you send us.
