So now you and the council ¹  request the commanding officer ²  to bring him down to you, as if you were going to determine ³  his case ⁴  by conducting a more thorough inquiry. ⁵  We are ready to kill him ⁶  before he comes near this place.” ⁷ 

Now Joseph’s brothers ¹  saw him from a distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

He waits in ambush near the villages; ¹  in hidden places he kills the innocent. His eyes look for some unfortunate victim. ² 

How long will you threaten ¹  a man? All of you are murderers, ²  as dangerous as a leaning wall or an unstable fence. ³ 

For he did not kill me before I came from the womb, making my pregnant mother’s womb my grave forever. ¹ 

Your altars will be ruined and your incense altars will be broken. I will throw down your slain in front of your idols. ¹ 

For this reason also the wisdom ¹  of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and persecute,’
