He also caused ¹  everyone (small and great, rich and poor, free and slave ² ) to obtain a mark on their right hand or on their forehead.

The Lord impoverishes and makes wealthy; he humbles and he exalts.

Have I not wept for the unfortunate? ¹  Was not my soul grieved for the poor?

If I have seen anyone about to perish for lack of clothing, or a poor man without a coat,

A prayer of David. Listen ²  O Lord! Answer me! For I am oppressed and needy.

as sorrowful, but always rejoicing, as poor, but making many rich, as having nothing, and yet possessing everything.

Just as it is written, “He ¹  has scattered widely, he has given to the poor; his righteousness remains forever.” ²
