If you besiege a city for a long time while attempting to capture it, ¹  you must not chop down its trees, ²  for you may eat fruit ³  from them and should not cut them down. A tree in the field is not human that you should besiege it! ⁴ 

Under the lotus trees it lies, in the secrecy of the reeds and the marsh.

He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore-fig trees with driving rain.

Here’s how! ¹  With the sharp arrows of warriors, with arrowheads forged over the hot coals. ² 

For if such things are done ¹  when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?” ² 

However, you may chop down any tree you know is not suitable for food, ¹  and you may use it to build siege works ²  against the city that is making war with you until that city falls.

Howl, fir tree, because the cedar has fallen; the majestic trees have been destroyed. Howl, oaks of Bashan, because the impenetrable forest has fallen.

This is what will happen to Pharaoh and all his hordes, declares the sovereign Lord.’”
