So they gathered it each morning, ¹  each person according to what he could eat, and when the sun got hot, it would melt. ² 

And to help you ¹  there is to be a man from each ²  tribe, each man ³  the head ⁴  of his family. ⁵ 

So they said to one another, ¹  “Let’s appoint ²  a leader ³  and return ⁴  to Egypt.”

“But if he strikes him suddenly, without enmity, or throws anything at him unintentionally,

I thought this was a good idea, ¹  so I sent ²  twelve men from among you, one from each tribe.

Bright and early the next morning Joshua had the priests pick up the ark of the Lord. ¹ 

Then Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was chosen by lot.

When David’s words were overheard and reported to Saul, he called for him. ¹ 

Now Saul’s son Jonathan had a son who was crippled in both feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan arrived from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but in her haste to get away, he fell and was injured. ¹  Mephibosheth was his name.

The Philistines ¹  abandoned their idols ²  there, and David and his men picked them up.

David again assembled ¹  all the best ²  men in Israel, thirty thousand in number.

But evil people are like thorns – all of them are tossed away, for they cannot be held in the hand.

He said to him, “This is what Ben Hadad says, ‘Your silver and your gold are mine, as well as the best of your wives and sons.’”

He did evil in the sight of ¹  the Lord as his ancestors had done.

Gad went to David and told him, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Pick one of these:

They cast lots, both young and old, according to their families, to determine which gate they would be responsible for. ¹ 

Jehoiada chose two wives for him who gave him sons and daughters.

Then I set apart twelve of the leading priests, together with ¹  Sherebiah, Hashabiah, and ten of their brothers, ² 

While they are still beginning to flower ¹  and not ripe for cutting, ²  they can wither away ³  faster ⁴  than any grass! ⁵ 

Realize that ¹  the Lord shows the godly special favor; ²  the Lord responds ³  when I cry out to him.
