In the morning you must approach in tribal order. ¹  The tribe the Lord selects ²  must approach by clans. The clan the Lord selects must approach by families. ³  The family the Lord selects must approach man by man. ⁴ 

Gideon ¹  said to him, “But Lord, ²  how ³  can I deliver Israel? Just look! My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the youngest in my family.” ⁴ 

those of them numbered by their families, by their clans, were 2,630.

These were the families of the Reubenites; and those numbered of them were 43,730. ¹ 

These were the families of the Gadites according to those numbered of them, 40,500. ¹ 

These were the families of Judah according to those numbered of them, 76,500. ¹ 

These were the families of Issachar, according to those numbered of them, 64,300. ¹

The border of the tribe of Reuben was the Jordan. The land allotted to the tribe of Reuben by its clans included these cities and their towns. ¹ 

The second lot belonged to the tribe of Simeon by its clans. ¹ 

Merari’s descendants by their clans were allotted twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.

The Merarite clans (the remaining Levites) were allotted twelve cities.
