Then Daniel spoke with prudent counsel ¹  to Arioch, who was in charge of the king’s executioners and who had gone out to execute the wise men of Babylon.

But since the king’s command was so urgent, and the furnace was so excessively hot, the men who escorted ¹  Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were killed ²  by the leaping flames. ³ 

Wail, you who live in the market district, ¹  for all the merchants ²  will disappear ³  and those who count money ⁴  will be removed. ⁵ 

So ¹  he sent another slave to them again. This one they struck on the head and treated outrageously.

they will pick up snakes with their hands, and whatever poison they drink will not harm them; ¹  they will place their hands on the sick and they will be well.”

But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Go away from me, Lord, ¹  for I am a sinful man!” ² 

Jesus ¹  also said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who was informed of accusations ²  that his manager ³  was wasting ⁴  his assets.

Now when the centurion ¹  saw what had happened, he praised God and said, “Certainly this man was innocent!” ² 

Why don’t you understand what I am saying? It is because you cannot accept ¹  my teaching. ² 

Then the commander ¹  of the temple guard ²  went with the officers ³  and brought the apostles ⁴  without the use of force ⁵  (for they were afraid of being stoned by the people). ⁶ 

I fed you milk, ¹  not solid food, for you were not yet ready. In fact, you are still not ready,

Instead I subdue my body and make it my slave, so that after preaching to others I myself will not be disqualified.

It is not rude, it is not self-serving, it is not easily angered or resentful.

I became a servant of this gospel ¹  according to the gift of God’s grace that was given to me by ²  the exercise of his power. ³ 

For this reason, take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to stand your ground ¹  on the evil day, and having done everything, to stand.

He must manage his own household well and keep his children in control without losing his dignity. ¹ 

The merchants who sold ¹  these things, who got rich from her, will stand a long way off because they are afraid of her torment. They will weep ²  and mourn,

You must by all means lend ¹  to him and not be upset by doing it, ²  for because of this the Lord your God will bless you in all your work and in everything you attempt.

(Now this used to be the customary way to finalize a transaction involving redemption in Israel: ¹  A man would remove his sandal and give it to the other party. ²  This was a legally binding act ³  in Israel.)
