Your anger overwhelms me; ¹  your terrors destroy me.

He made it dark; ¹  they did not disobey his orders. ² 

He brought them out of the utter darkness, ¹  and tore off their shackles.

For ¹  I am like a wineskin ²  dried up in smoke. ³  I do not forget your statutes.

The one who says to the guilty, ¹  “You are innocent,” ²  peoples will curse him, and nations will denounce ³  him.

When one looks out over the land, he sees ¹  distress and darkness, gloom ²  and anxiety, darkness and people forced from the land. ³ 

In their streets they wear sackcloth; on their roofs and in their town squares all of them wail, they fall down weeping.

So put on sackcloth! Mourn and wail, saying, ‘The fierce anger of the Lord has not turned away from us!’” ¹ 

My heart is crushed because my dear people ¹  are being crushed. ²  I go about crying and grieving. I am overwhelmed with dismay. ³ 

He drove me into captivity ¹  and made me walk ²  in darkness and not light.

¹ O Lord, reflect on ²  what has happened to us; consider ³  and look at ⁴  our disgrace.

Javan, Tubal, and Meshech were your clients; they exchanged slaves and bronze items for your merchandise.

The earth quakes ¹  before them; ²  the sky reverberates. ³  The sun and the moon grow dark; the stars refuse to shine. ⁴ 

The sunlight will be turned to darkness and the moon to the color of blood, ¹  before the day of the Lord comes – that great and terrible day!

But some of them said, “By the power of Beelzebul, ¹  the ruler ²  of demons, he casts out demons.”

The sun will be changed to darkness and the moon to blood before the great and glorious ¹  day of the Lord comes.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. ¹ 

(But there is one who made the constellations Pleiades and Orion; he can turn the darkness into morning and daylight ¹  into night. He summons the water of the seas and pours it out on the earth’s surface. The Lord is his name!

Now there were these prophets and teachers in the church at Antioch: ¹  Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, ²  Lucius the Cyrenian, ³  Manaen (a close friend of Herod ⁴  the tetrarch ⁵  from childhood ⁶ ) and Saul.

Show the Lord your God the respect that is due him. ¹  Do it before he brings the darkness of disaster. ²  Do it before you stumble ³  into distress like a traveler on the mountains at twilight. ⁴  Do it before he turns the light of deliverance you hope for into the darkness and gloom of exile. ⁵
