But Jesus turned to them and said, “Daughters of Jerusalem, ¹  do not weep for me, but weep for yourselves ²  and for your children.

You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Christ,’ ¹  but rather, ‘I have been sent before him.’

And God will exalt you in due time, ¹  if you humble yourselves under his mighty hand ² 

Intermarry with us. ¹  Let us marry your daughters, and take our daughters as wives for yourselves. ² 

When they sprout leaves, you see ¹  for yourselves and know that summer is now near.

For you know quite well that the day of the Lord ¹  will come in the same way as a thief in the night. ² 

But be sure you live out the message and do not merely listen to it and so deceive yourselves.

If so, have you not made distinctions ¹  among yourselves and become judges with evil motives? ² 

For see what this very thing, this sadness ¹  as God intended, has produced in you: what eagerness, what defense of yourselves, ²  what indignation, ³  what alarm, what longing, what deep concern, ⁴  what punishment! ⁵  In everything you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.

And the incense that you are to make, you must not make for yourselves using the same recipe; it is to be most holy to you, belonging to the Lord.

I say this ¹  so you will not corrupt yourselves by making an image in the form of any kind of figure. This includes the likeness of a human male or female,

“‘But I said to their children ¹  in the wilderness, “Do not follow the practices of your fathers; do not observe their regulations, ²  nor defile yourselves with their idols.

You will pick up your images ¹  of Sikkuth, ²  your king, ³  and Kiyyun, ⁴  your star god, which you made for yourselves,

‘No,’ they replied. ¹  ‘There won’t be enough for you and for us. Go instead to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

Woe to you experts in religious law! You have taken away ¹  the key to knowledge! You did not go in yourselves, and you hindered ²  those who were going in.”

There will be weeping and gnashing of teeth ¹  when you see Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, ²  and all the prophets in the kingdom of God ³  but you yourselves thrown out. ⁴ 

When ¹  he saw them he said, “Go ²  and show yourselves to the priests.” ³  And ⁴  as they went along, they were cleansed.

So you too consider yourselves ¹  dead to sin, but ²  alive to God in Christ Jesus.

But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith, by praying in the Holy Spirit, ¹ 

Let a little water be brought so that ¹  you may all ²  wash your feet and rest under the tree.
