Now in a wealthy home ¹  there are not only gold and silver vessels, but also ones made of wood and of clay, and some are for honorable use, but others for ignoble use. ² 

Then ¹  the kings of the earth, the ²  very important people, the generals, ³  the rich, the powerful, and everyone, slave ⁴  and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains.

The merchants who sold ¹  these things, who got rich from her, will stand a long way off because they are afraid of her torment. They will weep ²  and mourn,

In this way Jacob ¹  became extremely prosperous. He owned ²  large flocks, male and female servants, camels, and donkeys.

In this way God has snatched away your father’s livestock and given them to me.

Be careful ¹  not to say, “My own ability and skill ²  have gotten me this wealth.”

The Lord impoverishes and makes wealthy; he humbles and he exalts.

These who are named above were the leaders of their clans. Their extended families increased greatly in numbers.

Jehoshaphat was very wealthy and greatly respected. He made an alliance by marriage with Ahab,

“Why do the wicked go on living, ¹  grow old, ²  even increase in power?

Wealthy people do not understand; ¹  they are like animals ²  that perish. ³ 

Fools ¹  are placed in many positions of authority, ²  while wealthy men sit in lowly positions.

Lambs ¹  will graze as if in their pastures, amid the ruins the rich sojourners will graze. ² 

A fool will no longer be called honorable; a deceiver will no longer be called principled.

Now ¹  when it was evening, there came a rich man from Arimathea, named Joseph, who was also a disciple of Jesus. ² 

But when the man ¹  heard this he became very sad, ²  for he was extremely wealthy.

When Jesus noticed this, ¹  he said, “How hard ²  it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! ³ 

Now ¹  a man named Zacchaeus was there; he was a chief tax collector ²  and was rich.

Ephraim boasts, ¹  “I am very rich! I have become wealthy! ²  In all that I have done to gain my wealth, ³  no one can accuse me of any offense ⁴  that is actually sinful.” ⁵ 

If we do so, ¹  won’t their livestock, their property, and all their animals become ours? So let’s consent to their demand, so they will live among us.”
