They were stoned, sawed apart, ¹  murdered with the sword; they went about in sheepskins and goatskins; they were destitute, afflicted, ill-treated

So ¹  when the devil ²  had completed every temptation, he departed from him until a more opportune time. ³ 

Others, to test ¹  him, ²  began asking for ³  a sign ⁴  from heaven.

He called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contending of the Israelites and because of their testing the Lord, ¹  saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

So the people contended ¹  with Moses, and they said, “Give us water to drink!” ²  Moses said to them, “Why do you contend ³  with me? Why do you test ⁴  the Lord?”

My child, if sinners ¹  try to entice ²  you, do not consent! ³ 

But Jesus ¹  perceived their deceit ²  and said to them,

It will never again be Israel’s source of confidence, but a reminder of how they sinned by turning to Egypt for help. ¹  Then they will know that I am the sovereign Lord.’”

So now we consider the arrogant to be happy; indeed, those who practice evil are successful. ¹  In fact, those who challenge ²  God escape!’”

Now ¹  an expert in religious law ²  stood up to test Jesus, ³  saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” ⁴ 

where your ancestors challenged my authority, ¹  and tried my patience, even though they had seen my work.

Do not exploit ¹  a poor person because he is poor and do not crush the needy in court, ² 

Now when the Pharisees ¹  and Sadducees ²  came to test Jesus, ³  they asked him to show them a sign from heaven. ⁴ 

But Jesus realized their evil intentions and said, “Hypocrites! Why are you testing me?

And one of them, an expert in religious law, ¹  asked him a question to test ²  him:

“There your fathers tested me and tried me, ¹  and they saw my works for forty years.

For all the people have seen my glory and my signs that I did in Egypt and in the wilderness, and yet have tempted ¹  me now these ten times, ²  and have not obeyed me, ³ 

Some time after these things God tested ¹  Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!” “Here I am!” Abraham ²  replied.

Go up ¹  to a land flowing with milk and honey. But ²  I will not go up among you, for you are a stiff-necked people, and I might destroy you ³  on the way.”

Woe to the world because of stumbling blocks! It ¹  is necessary that stumbling blocks come, but woe to the person through whom they come.
