Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified, ¹  trembling will seize ²  the leaders of Moab, and the inhabitants of Canaan will shake.

They panic – cramps and pain seize hold of them like those of a woman who is straining to give birth. They look at one another in astonishment; their faces are flushed red. ¹ 

Sinners are afraid in Zion; panic ¹  grips the godless. ²  They say, ³  ‘Who among us can coexist with destructive fire? Who among us can coexist with unquenchable ⁴  fire?’

when they grasped you with their hand, ¹  you broke and tore ²  their shoulders, and when they leaned on you, you splintered and caused their legs to be unsteady. ³ 

Therefore, brothers and sisters, ¹  stand firm and hold on to the traditions that we taught you, whether by speech or by letter. ² 

To do this ¹  you must hold firmly to faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and so have suffered shipwreck in regard to the faith.

Then he washed his face and came out. With composure he said, ¹  “Set out the food.”

He will infect you with all the diseases of Egypt ¹  that you dreaded, and they will persistently afflict you. ² 

But evil people are like thorns – all of them are tossed away, for they cannot be held in the hand.

Solomon sat on his father David’s throne, and his royal authority ¹  was firmly solidified.

who ¹  would take his ²  rod ³  away from me so that his terror ⁴  would not make me afraid.

For ¹  then you will lift up your face without ²  blemish; ³  you will be securely established ⁴  and will not fear.

Surely now he ¹  has worn me out, you have devastated my entire household.

But the righteous man holds to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger. ¹ 

and throw ¹  your gold ²  in the dust – your gold ³  of Ophir among the rocks in the ravines –

That is why I am terrified in his presence; when I consider, I am afraid because of him.

that it might seize the corners of the earth, ¹  and shake the wicked out of it?

Even if ¹  he trips, he will not fall headlong, ²  for the Lord holds ³  his hand.

My God, rescue me from the power ¹  of the wicked, from the hand of the cruel oppressor!

Your arm is powerful, your hand strong, your right hand ¹  victorious. ²
