But he lifted up our illnesses, he carried our pain; ¹  even though we thought he was being punished, attacked by God, and afflicted for something he had done. ² 

In fact he became so ill that he nearly died. ¹  But God showed mercy to him – and not to him only, but also to me – so that I would not have grief on top of grief.

“But ¹  if I speak, my pain is not relieved, ²  and if I refrain from speaking – how ³  much of it goes away?

Then I said, “I am sickened by the thought that the sovereign One ¹  might become inactive. ² 

I collapse ¹  from grief. Sustain me by your word! ² 

My heart is crushed because my dear people ¹  are being crushed. ²  I go about crying and grieving. I am overwhelmed with dismay. ³ 

You have taken notice, ¹  for ²  you always see ³  one who inflicts pain and suffering. ⁴  The unfortunate victim entrusts his cause to you; ⁵  you deliver ⁶  the fatherless. ⁷ 

He was despised and rejected by people, ¹  one who experienced pain and was acquainted with illness; people hid their faces from him; ²  he was despised, and we considered him insignificant. ³ 

For he is not predisposed to afflict ¹  or to grieve people. ² 

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.

But if anyone has caused sadness, he has not saddened me alone, but to some extent (not to exaggerate) ¹  he has saddened all of you as well.

As much as ¹  she exalted herself and lived in sensual luxury, ²  to this extent give her torment and grief because she said to herself, ³  ‘I rule as queen and am no widow; I will never experience grief!’

Though the Lord desired to crush him and make him ill, once restitution is made, ¹  he will see descendants and enjoy long life, ²  and the Lord’s purpose will be accomplished through him.

Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth, ¹  and mourned for his son many days.

Whoever brings a fool ¹  into the world ²  does so ³  to his grief, and the father of a fool has no joy. ⁴ 

They will kill him, and on the third day he will be raised.” And they became greatly distressed.

A great number of the people followed him, among them women ¹  who were mourning ²  and wailing for him.

I wear sackcloth and they ridicule me. ¹ 

“And you, sing ¹  a lament for the princes of Israel,

And he went outside and wept bitterly. ¹
