Paul looked directly ¹  at the council ²  and said, “Brothers, I have lived my life with a clear conscience ³  before God to this day.”

Come out, O maidens of Zion, and gaze upon King Solomon! He is wearing the crown with which his mother crowned him on his wedding day, on the most joyous day of his life! ¹ 

You are tired out from listening to so much advice. ¹  Let them take their stand – the ones who see omens in the sky, who gaze at the stars, who make monthly predictions – let them rescue you from the disaster that is about to overtake you! ² 

Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom on account of your splendor. I threw you down to the ground; I placed you before kings, that they might see you.

and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here ¹  looking up into the sky? This same Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven ²  will come back in the same way you saw him go into heaven.”

From there it spots ¹  its prey, ²  its eyes gaze intently from a distance.

As I stared ¹  I looked into it and saw four-footed animals of the earth, wild animals, reptiles, ²  and wild birds. ³ 

This man was listening to Paul as he was speaking. When Paul ¹  stared ²  intently at him and saw he had faith to be healed,

Do not stare at me because ¹  I am dark, for ²  the sun has burned my skin. ³  My brothers ⁴  were angry ⁵  with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards. Alas, my own vineyard ⁶  I could not keep! ⁷ 

Will you never ¹  look away from me, ²  will you not let me alone ³  long enough to swallow my spittle?

Surely mockery ¹  is with me; ²  my eyes must dwell on their hostility. ³ 

I cry out to you, ¹  but you do not answer me; I stand up, ²  and you only look at me. ³ 

I can count ¹  all my bones; my enemies ²  are gloating over me in triumph. ³ 

Yes, ¹  in the sanctuary I have seen you, ²  and witnessed ³  your power and splendor.

Their slander will bring about their demise. ¹  All who see them will shudder, ² 

For he will look down from his sanctuary above; ¹  from heaven the Lord will look toward earth, ² 

For ¹  I am like a wineskin ²  dried up in smoke. ³  I do not forget your statutes.

Do not look on the wine when it is red, when it sparkles ¹  in the cup, when it goes down smoothly. ² 

Gazing at Jesus as he walked by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” ¹ 

But Saul (also known as Paul), ¹  filled with the Holy Spirit, ²  stared straight ³  at him
