The unbeliever ¹  does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him. And he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.

The one who is spiritual discerns ¹  all things, yet he himself is understood ²  by no one.

to another performance of miracles, to another prophecy, and to another discernment of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, and to another the interpretation of tongues.

But solid food is for the mature, whose perceptions are trained by practice to discern both good and evil.

God gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment; the breadth of his understanding ¹  was as infinite as the sand on the seashore.

that you may take them to their borders and perceive the pathways to their homes? ¹ 

Teach me proper discernment ¹  and understanding! For I consider your commands to be reliable. ² 

(Let the wise also ¹  hear ²  and gain ³  instruction, and let the discerning ⁴  acquire ⁵  guidance! ⁶ )

indeed, if ¹  you call out for ²  discernment ³  – raise your voice ⁴  for understanding –

and I saw among the naive – I discerned among the youths ¹  – a young man ²  who lacked wisdom. ³ 

The one who is wise in heart ¹  is called ²  discerning, and kind speech ³  increases persuasiveness. ⁴ 

A rebuke makes a greater impression on ¹  a discerning person than a hundred blows on a fool. ² 

Flog ¹  a scorner, and as a result the simpleton ²  will learn prudence; ³  correct a discerning person, and as a result he will understand knowledge. ⁴ 

I ¹  grant your request, ²  and give ³  you a wise and discerning mind ⁴  superior to that of anyone who has preceded or will succeed you. ⁵ 

To impart ¹  shrewdness ²  to the morally naive, ³  and ⁴  a discerning ⁵  plan ⁶  to the young person. ⁷ 

The discerning person ¹  acquires knowledge, and the wise person ²  seeks ³  knowledge.

Moreover, they will teach my people the difference between the holy and the common, and show them how to distinguish between the ceremonially unclean and the clean. ¹ 

For the one who eats and drinks without careful regard ¹  for the body eats and drinks judgment against himself.

And I pray this, that your love may abound even more and more in knowledge and every kind of insight

I am presently eighty years old. Am I able to discern good and bad? Can I ¹  taste what I eat and drink? Am I still able to hear the voices of male and female singers? Why should I ²  continue to be a burden to my lord the king?
