When his brothers had gone to graze their father’s flocks near Shechem,

One day ¹  he went into the house to do his work when none of the household servants ²  were there in the house.

Then he threw himself on the neck of his brother Benjamin and wept, and Benjamin wept on his neck.

Joseph ¹  made all the people slaves ²  from one end of Egypt’s border to the other end of it.

So ¹  the child’s ²  father ³  and mother were amazed ⁴  at what was said about him.

This advice made sense to Pharaoh and all his officials. ¹ 

Chariots and horsemen also went up with him, so it was a very large entourage. ¹ 

Now Joseph’s brothers ¹  saw him from a distance, and before he reached them, they plotted to kill him.

Jacob ¹  said, “Swear to me that you will do so.” ²  So Joseph ³  gave him his word. ⁴  Then Israel bowed down ⁵  at the head of his bed. ⁶ 

Joseph ¹  collected all the excess food ²  in the land of Egypt during the seven years and stored it in the cities. ³  In every city he put the food gathered from the fields around it.

Then the man ¹  searched. He began with the oldest and finished with the youngest. The cup was found in Benjamin’s sack!

So Pharaoh said, “Go and bury your father, just as he made you swear to do.” ¹ 

until the time when his prediction ¹  came true. The Lord’s word ²  proved him right. ³ 

He put him in charge of his palace, ¹  and made him manager of all his property,

So ¹  when Joseph and Mary ²  had performed ³  everything according to the law of the Lord, ⁴  they returned to Galilee, to their own town ⁵  of Nazareth. ⁶ 

the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,

the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,

When Reuben heard this, he rescued Joseph ¹  from their hands, ²  saying, ³  “Let’s not take his life!” ⁴ 

They set a place for him, a separate place for his brothers, ¹  and another for the Egyptians who were eating with him. (The Egyptians are not able to eat with Hebrews, for the Egyptians think it is disgusting ²  to do so.) ³ 

They sat before him, arranged by order of birth, beginning with the firstborn and ending with the youngest. ¹  The men looked at each other in astonishment. ²
