Then from the wicked the light is withheld, and the arm raised in violence ¹  is broken. ² 

The God of this people Israel ¹  chose our ancestors ²  and made the people great ³  during their stay as foreigners ⁴  in the country ⁵  of Egypt, and with uplifted arm ⁶  he led them out of it.

You are still exalting ¹  yourself against my people by ²  not releasing them.

for all the tall mountains, for all the high hills, ¹ 

adultery, greed, evil, deceit, debauchery, envy, slander, pride, and folly.

For you give them splendor and strength. ¹  By your favor we are victorious. ² 

So he made a solemn vow ¹  that he would make them die ²  in the desert,

May you accept my prayer like incense, my uplifted hands like the evening offering! ¹ 

O Lord, do not let the wicked have their way! ¹  Do not allow their ²  plan to succeed when they attack! ³  (Selah)

All the people were aware ¹  of it, the people of Ephraim and those living in Samaria. ²  Yet with pride and an arrogant attitude, they said, ³ 

I also swore ¹  to them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them throughout the lands. ² 

So this is what the sovereign Lord says: I vow ¹  that the nations around you will endure insults as well.

When the army is taken away, the king of the south will become arrogant. ¹  He will be responsible for the death ²  of thousands and thousands of people, ³  but he will not continue to prevail.

do not boast over the branches. But if you boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

For people ¹  will be lovers of themselves, ²  lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy,

and say to them: “‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: On the day I chose Israel I swore ¹  to the descendants ²  of the house of Jacob and made myself known to them in the land of Egypt. I swore ³  to them, “I am the Lord your God.”

I will bring you to the land I swore to give ¹  to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob – and I will give it to you ²  as a possession. I am the Lord!’”

You will by no means enter into the land where ¹  I swore ²  to settle ³  you. The only exceptions are Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.

But I fear the reaction ¹  of their enemies, for ²  their adversaries would misunderstand and say, “Our power is great, ³  and the Lord has not done all this!”’

The Lord said to Gideon, “You have too many men for me to hand Midian over to you. ¹  Israel might brag, ²  ‘Our own strength has delivered us.’ ³
