So let the one who thinks he is standing be careful that he does not fall.

For if anyone thinks he is something when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

If anyone considers himself a prophet or spiritual person, he should acknowledge that what I write to you is the Lord’s command.

If anyone thinks he is acting inappropriately toward his virgin, ¹  if she is past the bloom of youth ²  and it seems necessary, he should do what he wishes; he does not sin. Let them marry.

If someone thinks he is religious yet does not bridle his tongue, and so deceives his heart, his religion is futile.

If someone thinks he knows something, he does not yet know to the degree that he needs to know.

Guard against self-deception, each of you. ¹  If someone among you thinks he is wise in this age, let him become foolish so that he can become wise.

– though mine too are significant. ¹  If someone thinks he has good reasons to put confidence in human credentials, ²  I have more:

So listen carefully, ¹  for whoever has will be given more, but ²  whoever does not have, even what he thinks he has ³  will be taken from him.”

for he is ¹  like someone calculating the cost ²  in his mind. ³  “Eat and drink,” he says to you, but his heart is not with you;

I know and am convinced in the Lord Jesus that there is nothing unclean in itself; still, it is unclean to the one who considers it unclean.

He says to himself, ¹  “God overlooks it; he does not pay attention; he never notices.” ² 

The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, but the heart of fools is in the house of merrymaking. ¹ 

So Samuel told him everything. He did not hold back anything from him. Eli ¹  said, “The Lord will do what he pleases.” ² 

One person regards one day holier than other days, and another regards them all alike. ¹  Each must be fully convinced in his own mind.

But God chose what the world thinks foolish to shame the wise, and God chose what the world thinks weak to shame the strong.

Then they said, “We’ll call the girl and find out what she wants to do.” ¹ 

The wisest of her ladies ¹  answer; indeed she even thinks to herself,

But if only God would speak, ¹  if only he would open his lips against you, ² 

Whoever lives a blameless life, ¹  does what is right, and speaks honestly. ²
