Abraham said, “I swear to do this.” ¹ 

So Pharaoh said, “Go and bury your father, just as he made you swear to do.” ¹ 

These people make promises in the name of the Lord. ¹  But the fact is, ²  what they swear to is really a lie.” ³ 

The men said to her, “We are not bound by this oath you made us swear unless the following conditions are met: ¹ 

Now when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could swear by no one greater, he swore by himself,

I will remove ¹  those who worship the stars in the sky from their rooftops, ²  those who swear allegiance to the Lord ³  while taking oaths in the name of ⁴  their ‘king,’ ⁵ 

But Jacob said, “Swear an oath to me now.” ¹  So Esau ²  swore an oath to him and sold his birthright ³  to Jacob.

You must not swear falsely ¹  in my name, so that you do not profane ²  the name of your God. I am the Lord.

But, if you do not obey these commands, I solemnly swear ¹  that this palace will become a pile of rubble. I, the Lord, affirm it!” ² 

And to whom did he swear they would never enter into his rest, except those who were disobedient?

Jacob ¹  said, “Swear to me that you will do so.” ²  So Joseph ³  gave him his word. ⁴  Then Israel bowed down ⁵  at the head of his bed. ⁶ 

If you should report what we’ve been up to, ¹  we are not bound by this oath you made us swear.”

But they must make sure you learn to follow the religious practices of my people. ¹  Once they taught my people to swear their oaths using the name of the god Baal. ²  But then, they must swear oaths using my name, saying, “As surely as the Lord lives, I swear.” ³  If they do these things, ⁴  then they will be included among the people I call my own. ⁵ 

Do not take an oath by your head, because you are not able to make one hair white or black.

At that he began to curse, and he swore with an oath, “I do not know the man!” At that moment a rooster crowed. ¹ 

For people ¹  swear by something greater than themselves, ²  and the oath serves as a confirmation to end all dispute. ³ 

You steal. ¹  You murder. You commit adultery. You lie when you swear on oath. You sacrifice to the god Baal. You pay allegiance to ²  other gods whom you have not previously known.

You must revere the Lord your God, serve him, and take oaths using only his name.

Then he began to curse, and he swore with an oath, “I do not know this man you are talking about!”

so that I may make you solemnly promise ¹  by the Lord, the God of heaven and the God of the earth: You must not acquire ²  a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living.
