At the sound of your battle cry, ¹  O God of Jacob, both rider ²  and horse “fell asleep.” ³ 

They told him, “Joseph is still alive and he is ruler over all the land of Egypt!” Jacob was stunned, ¹  for he did not believe them.

Look ¹  at me and be appalled; put your hands over your mouths. ² 

At this also my heart pounds and leaps from its place.

As soon as they see, ¹  they are shocked; ²  they are terrified, they quickly retreat. ³ 

Now when they heard this they were stunned, ¹  and they left him and went away.

(For they were afraid, and he did not know what to say.) ¹ 

מ (Mem) He sent down fire ¹  into my bones, and it overcame ²  them. He spread out a trapper’s net ³  for my feet; he made me turn back. He has made me desolate; I am faint all day long.

My heart is crushed because my dear people ¹  are being crushed. ²  I go about crying and grieving. I am overwhelmed with dismay. ³ 

And the men ¹  were amazed and said, ²  “What sort of person is this? Even the winds and the sea obey him!” ³ 

All the crowds were amazed and said, “Could this one be the Son of David?”

They ¹  became greatly distressed ²  and each one began to say to him, “Surely not I, Lord?”

Then he went up with them into the boat, and the wind ceased. They were completely astonished,

They were distressed, and one by one said to him, “Surely not I?”

My heart palpitates, ¹  I shake in fear; ²  the twilight I desired has brought me terror.

You will be shocked and amazed! ¹  You are totally blind! ²  They are drunk, ³  but not because of wine; they stagger, ⁴  but not because of beer.

As he spoke with me, I fell into a trance with my face to the ground. But he touched me and stood me upright. ¹ 

After the demon was cast out, the man who had been mute spoke. The crowds were amazed and said, “Never has anything like this been seen in Israel!”

Then ¹  they went out and ran from the tomb, for terror and bewilderment had seized them. ²  And they said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.

Thus ¹  they were unable in the presence of the people to trap ²  him with his own words. ³  And stunned ⁴  by his answer, they fell silent.
