The one who puts up security for a stranger ¹  will surely have trouble, ²  but whoever avoids ³  shaking hands ⁴  will be secure.

Although they claimed ¹  to be wise, they became fools

For God deprived her of wisdom, and did not impart understanding to her.

Take notice of this, ¹  you ignorant people! ²  You fools, when will you ever understand?

A wicked scoundrel ¹  digs up ²  evil, and his slander ³  is like a scorching fire. ⁴ 

Those who think they are wise are as good as dead, ¹  those who think they possess understanding. ² 

“‘But just look at you! ¹  You are putting your confidence in a false belief ²  that will not deliver you. ³ 

Five ¹  of the virgins ²  were foolish, and five were wise.

But the wise ones took flasks of olive oil with their lamps.

For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? ¹ 

For since you are so wise, you put up with ¹  fools gladly.

For the wise man, like ¹  the fool, will not be remembered for very long, ²  because ³  in the days to come, both will already have been forgotten. ⁴  Alas, ⁵  the wise man dies – just like ⁶  the fool!

“Is it to God that a strong man is of benefit? Is it to him that even a wise man is profitable? ¹ 

Tell us what we should ¹  say to him. We cannot prepare a case ²  because of the darkness.

¹ I say to the proud, “Do not be proud,” and to the wicked, “Do not be so confident of victory! ² 

Whoever corrects ¹  a mocker is asking for ²  insult; ³  whoever reproves a wicked person receives ⁴  abuse.

The one who associates ¹  with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm. ² 

A king’s wrath ¹  is like ²  a messenger of death, ³  but a wise person appeases it. ⁴ 

Even a fool who remains silent is considered ¹  wise, and the one who holds his tongue is deemed discerning. ² 

A person’s wisdom ¹  makes him slow to anger, ²  and it is his glory ³  to overlook ⁴  an offense.
