Be amazed at this, O heavens! ¹  Be shocked and utterly dumbfounded,” says the Lord.

I myself will make the land desolate and your enemies who live in it will be appalled.

So see here, I have stretched out my hand against you and cut off your rations. I have delivered you into the power of those who hate you, the daughters of the Philistines, who were ashamed by your obscene conduct.

So I responded to you, “Do not be terrified ¹  of them!

As soon as they see, ¹  they are shocked; ²  they are terrified, they quickly retreat. ³ 

My strength leaves me; ¹  I am absolutely shocked. ² 

They were even more astonished and said ¹  to one another, “Then ²  who can be saved?” ³ 

his form was so marred he no longer looked human ¹  – so now ²  he will startle ³  many nations. Kings will be shocked by his exaltation, ⁴  for they will witness something unannounced to them, and they will understand something they had not heard about.

Now at that very moment his disciples came back. ¹  They were shocked ²  because he was speaking ³  with a woman. However, no one said, “What do you want?” ⁴  or “Why are you speaking with her?”

People of the west ¹  are appalled at his fate; ²  people of the east are seized with horror, ³  saying, ⁴ 

But at this statement, the man ¹  looked sad and went away sorrowful, for he was very rich. ² 

The ¹  Pharisee was astonished when he saw that Jesus ²  did not first wash his hands ³  before the meal.

Early in the morning ¹  Abimelech summoned ²  all his servants. When he told them about all these things, ³  they ⁴  were terrified.

You will be shocked and amazed! ¹  You are totally blind! ²  They are drunk, ³  but not because of wine; they stagger, ⁴  but not because of beer.

All the inhabitants of the coastlands are shocked at you, and their kings are horribly afraid – their faces are troubled.

All who know you among the peoples are shocked at you; you have become terrified and will be no more.’”

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one ¹  who called you by the grace of Christ ²  and are following ³  a different ⁴  gospel –

If I go out into the countryside, I see those who have been killed in battle. If I go into the city, I see those who are sick because of starvation. ¹  For both prophet and priest go about their own business in the land without having any real understanding.’” ² 

When the men of Ai turned around, they saw ¹  the smoke from the city ascending into the sky and were so shocked they were unable to flee in any direction. ²  In the meantime the men who were retreating to the desert turned against their pursuers.

This temple will become a heap of ruins; ¹  everyone who passes by it will be shocked and will hiss out their scorn, ²  saying, ‘Why did the Lord do this to this land and this temple?’
