My child, pay attention to my words; listen attentively ¹  to my sayings.

Have I not written thirty sayings ¹  for you, sayings ²  of counsel and knowledge,

These sayings also are from the wise: To show partiality ¹  in judgment is terrible: ² 

I will sing a song that imparts wisdom; I will make insightful observations about the past. ¹ 

To discern ¹  the meaning of ²  a proverb and a parable, ³  the sayings of the wise ⁴  and their ⁵  riddles. ⁶ 

The words of the sages are like prods, ¹  and the collected sayings are like firmly fixed nails; they are given by one shepherd.

Your maxims ¹  are proverbs of ashes; ²  your defenses ³  are defenses of clay. ⁴ 

Now ¹  about eight days ²  after these sayings, Jesus ³  took with him Peter, John, and James, and went up the mountain to pray.

Listen, my child, ¹  and accept my words, so that ²  the years of your life will be many. ³
