¹ “The wings of the ostrich ²  flap with joy, ³  but are they the pinions and plumage of a stork? ⁴ 

the ostrich, ¹  the owl, ²  the seagull, the falcon ³  after its species,

the eagle owl, ¹  the short-eared owl, the long-eared owl, the hawk of any kind,

For she leaves ¹  her eggs on the ground, and lets them be warmed on the soil.

ג (Gimel) Even the jackals ¹  nurse their young at their breast, ²  but my people ³  are cruel, like ostriches ⁴  in the desert.

For this reason I ¹  will mourn and wail; I will walk around barefoot ²  and without my outer garments. ³  I will howl ⁴  like a wild dog, ⁵  and screech ⁶  like an owl. ⁷
