Panic and pitfall ¹  have come upon us, devastation and destruction. ²

Remove me from the path of deceit! ¹  Graciously give me ²  your law!

whose paths ¹  are morally crooked, ²  and who are devious ³  in their ways;

Treasures gained by wickedness ¹  do not profit, but righteousness ²  delivers from mortal danger. ³ 

in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

When the men of Ai turned around, they saw ¹  the smoke from the city ascending into the sky and were so shocked they were unable to flee in any direction. ²  In the meantime the men who were retreating to the desert turned against their pursuers.

For you can be confident of this one thing: ¹  that no person who is immoral, impure, or greedy (such a person is an idolater) has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God.

For evil does not come up from the dust, ¹  nor does trouble spring up from the ground,

thus ¹  I have been made to inherit ²  months of futility, ³  and nights of sorrow ⁴  have been appointed ⁵  to me.
