There is a generation whose eyes are so lofty, ¹  and whose eyelids are lifted up disdainfully. ² 

On every high, elevated hill you prepare your bed; you go up there to offer sacrifices.

“Is not God on high in heaven? ¹  And see ²  the lofty stars, ³  how high they are!

Indeed, the Lord who commands armies has planned a day of judgment, ¹  for ²  all the high and mighty, for all who are proud – they will be humiliated;

Indeed, ¹  the Lord knocks down those who live in a high place, he brings down an elevated town; he brings it down to the ground, ²  he throws it down to the dust.

for all the cedars of Lebanon, that are so high and mighty, for all the oaks of Bashan; ¹ 

for all the tall mountains, for all the high hills, ¹ 

“‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: “‘I will take a sprig ¹  from the lofty top of the cedar and plant it. ²  I will pluck from the top one of its tender twigs; I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain.

you built yourself a chamber ¹  and put up a pavilion ²  in every public square.

When I came ¹  to you, brothers and sisters, ²  I did not come with superior eloquence or wisdom as I proclaimed the testimony ³  of God.

O Lord, ¹  truly I have built a lofty temple for you, a place where you can live permanently.”

Look, the sovereign master, the Lord who commands armies, is ready to cut off the branches with terrifying power. ¹  The tallest trees ²  will be cut down, the loftiest ones will be brought low.

Proud men will be brought low, arrogant men will be humiliated; ¹  the Lord alone will be exalted ²  in that day.

and every arrogant obstacle ¹  that is raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thought captive to make it obey ²  Christ.

On every high mountain and every high hill there will be streams flowing with water, at the time of ¹  great slaughter when the fortified towers collapse.

O Lord, ¹  I have built a lofty temple for you, a place where you can live permanently.”

He waters the mountains from the upper rooms of his palace; ¹  the earth is full of the fruit you cause to grow. ² 

Men will be humiliated, they will be brought low; the proud will be brought low. ¹ 

a day of trumpet blasts ¹  and battle cries. ²  Judgment will fall on ³  the fortified cities and the high corner towers.

For this is what the high and exalted one says, the one who rules ¹  forever, whose name is holy: “I dwell in an exalted and holy place, but also with the discouraged and humiliated, ²  in order to cheer up the humiliated and to encourage the discouraged. ³
