Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few.

Therefore ask the Lord of the harvest ¹  to send out ²  workers into his harvest.”

And after agreeing with the workers for the standard wage, ¹  he sent them into his vineyard.

King Solomon conscripted ¹  work crews ²  from throughout Israel, 30,000 men in all.

Solomon also had 70,000 common laborers ¹  and 80,000 stonecutters ²  in the hills,

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner ¹  who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard.

Look, the pay you have held back from the workers who mowed your fields cries out against you, and the cries of the reapers have reached the ears of the Lord of hosts.

When ¹  it was evening ²  the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the workers and give the pay ³  starting with the last hired until the first.’

Then those in Judah said, “The strength of the laborers ¹  has failed! The debris is so great that we are unable to rebuild the wall.”

You must not oppress a lowly and poor servant, whether one from among your fellow Israelites ¹  or from the resident foreigners who are living in your land and villages. ² 

The Ephraimites ¹  did not conquer the Canaanites living in Gezer. The Canaanites live among the Ephraimites to this very day and do hard labor as their servants.

who were rebuilding the wall. ¹  Those who were carrying loads did so ²  by keeping one hand on the work and the other on their weapon.

Like a servant ¹  longing for the evening shadow, ²  and like a hired man looking ³  for his wages, ⁴ 

Look away from him and let him desist, ¹  until he fulfills ²  his time like a hired man.

A laborer’s ¹  appetite ²  works on his behalf, ³  for his hunger ⁴  urges him to work. ⁵
