You make us like filthy scum ¹  in the estimation ²  of the nations.

He raises the poor from the dirt, and lifts up the needy from the garbage pile, ¹

when people lie about us, we answer in a friendly manner. We are the world’s dirt and scum, even now.

For you hate instruction and reject my words. ¹ 

I am about to discipline your children ¹  and will spread offal ²  on your faces, ³  the very offal produced at your festivals, and you will be carried away along with it.

They reap fodder ¹  in the field, and glean ²  in the vineyard of the wicked.

I grind them as fine windblown dust; ¹  I beat them underfoot ²  like clay ³  in the streets.
