He deprives the trusted advisers ¹  of speech ²  and takes away the discernment ³  of elders.

Teach me proper discernment ¹  and understanding! For I consider your commands to be reliable. ² 

I am your servant. Give me insight, so that I can understand ¹  your rules.

indeed, if ¹  you call out for ²  discernment ³  – raise your voice ⁴  for understanding –

And I pray this, that your love may abound even more and more in knowledge and every kind of insight

Acquire ¹  truth and do not sell it – wisdom, and discipline, and understanding.

God gave Solomon wisdom and very great discernment; the breadth of his understanding ¹  was as infinite as the sand on the seashore.

For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and I will thwart the cleverness of the intelligent.” ¹ 

Listen, children, ²  to a father’s instruction, ³  and pay attention so that ⁴  you may gain ⁵  discernment.

With his speech ¹  the godless person ²  destroys ³  his neighbor, but by knowledge ⁴  the righteous will be delivered.

Therefore I will again do an amazing thing for these people – an absolutely extraordinary deed. ¹  Wise men will have nothing to say, the sages will have no explanations.” ² 

They are a nation devoid of wisdom, and there is no understanding among them.

So now, you kings, do what is wise; ¹  you rulers of the earth, submit to correction! ² 

Your precepts give me discernment. Therefore I hate all deceitful actions. ¹ 

Your instructions are a doorway through which light shines. ¹  They give ²  insight to the untrained. ³ 

Your rules remain just. ¹  Give me insight so that I can live. ² 

To impart ¹  shrewdness ²  to the morally naive, ³  and ⁴  a discerning ⁵  plan ⁶  to the young person. ⁷ 

My child, do not let them ¹  escape from your sight; safeguard sound wisdom and discretion. ² 

Wisdom is supreme ¹  – so ²  acquire wisdom, and whatever you acquire, ³  acquire understanding! ⁴ 

You who are naive, discern ¹  wisdom! And you fools, understand discernment! ²
