Pay careful attention to ¹  the condition of your flocks, ²  give careful attention ³  to your herds,

We will give you our consent on this one condition: You must become ¹  like us by circumcising ²  all your males.

Let each one remain in that situation in life ¹  in which he was called.

Only on this one condition will these men consent to live with us and become one people: They demand ¹  that every male among us be circumcised just as they are circumcised.

But Nahash the Ammonite said to them, “The only way I will make a treaty with you is if you let me gouge out the right eye of every one of you and in so doing humiliate all Israel!”

In whatever situation someone was called, brothers and sisters, ¹  let him remain in it with God.

But if you do not agree to our terms ¹  by being circumcised, then we will take ²  our sister ³  and depart.”

For now ¹  you have become like these streams that are no help; ²  you see a terror, ³  and are afraid.
