He sees the sword coming against the land, blows the trumpet, ¹  and warns the people, ² 

Beatings and wounds cleanse away ¹  evil, and floggings cleanse ²  the innermost being. ³ 

The grass dries up, the flowers wither, when the wind sent by the Lord ¹  blows on them. Surely humanity ²  is like grass.

A rebuke makes a greater impression on ¹  a discerning person than a hundred blows on a fool. ² 

The wind goes to the south and circles around to the north; round and round ¹  the wind goes and on its rounds it returns. ² 

It ¹  furiously struck down nations with unceasing blows. ²  It angrily ruled over nations, oppressing them without restraint. ³ 

Indeed, they are barely planted; yes, they are barely sown; yes, they barely take root in the earth, and then he blows on them, causing them to dry up, and the wind carries them away like straw.

The wind ¹  blows wherever it will, and you hear the sound it makes, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” ² 

The lips of a fool ¹  enter into strife, ²  and his mouth invites ³  a flogging. ⁴ 

Please stop wounding me! ¹  You have almost beaten me to death! ² 

but when the hot wind ¹  blows by, it disappears, and one can no longer even spot the place where it once grew.

The judge ¹  may sentence him to forty blows, ²  but no more. If he is struck with more than these, you might view your fellow Israelite ³  with contempt.

After they had beaten them severely, ¹  they threw them into prison and commanded ²  the jailer to guard them securely.

Judgments ¹  are prepared for scorners, and floggings for the backs of fools.

Look, I create the craftsman, who fans the coals into a fire and forges a weapon. ¹  I create the destroyer so he might devastate.

Then ¹  some began to spit on him, and to blindfold him, and to strike him with their fists, saying, “Prophesy!” The guards also took him and beat ²  him.

He will direct the blows of his battering rams against your walls and tear down your towers with his weapons. ¹ 

And when you see the south wind ¹  blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat,’ and there is.

Then, ¹  if the guilty person is sentenced to a beating, ²  the judge shall force him to lie down and be beaten in his presence with the number of blows his wicked behavior deserves. ³ 

I will become his father and he will become my son. When he sins, I will correct him with the rod of men and with wounds inflicted by human beings.
