The Lord was very angry with your ancestors. ¹ 

“For inquire now of the former ¹  generation, and pay attention ²  to the findings ³  of their ancestors; ⁴ 

where your ancestors challenged my authority, ¹  and tried my patience, even though they had seen my work.

Do not move an ancient boundary stone ¹  which was put in place by your ancestors. ² 

“As for your ancestors, where are they? And did the prophets live forever?

Your ancestors ¹  ate the manna in the wilderness, and they died.

how our ancestors went down into Egypt, and we lived in Egypt a long time, ¹  and the Egyptians treated us and our ancestors badly. ² 

I will remember for them the covenant with their ancestors ¹  whom I brought out from the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations to be their God. I am the Lord.’”

Then he ¹  will bring you to the land your ancestors ²  possessed and you also will possess it; he will do better for you and multiply you more than he did your ancestors.

His body was carried back by horses ¹  and he was buried in Jerusalem with his ancestors in the city of David.

He abandoned the Lord God of his ancestors and did not follow the Lord’s instructions. ¹ 

He did evil in the sight of ¹  the Lord as his ancestors had done. ² 

He did evil in the sight of ¹  the Lord as his ancestors had done.

“But they – our ancestors ¹  – behaved presumptuously; they rebelled ²  and did not obey your commandments.

Lord, we confess that we have been wicked. We confess that our ancestors have done wrong. ¹  We have indeed ²  sinned against you.

Woe to you! You build ¹  the tombs of the prophets whom your ancestors ²  killed.

After God spoke long ago ¹  in various portions ²  and in various ways ³  to our ancestors ⁴  through the prophets,

In you our ancestors ¹  trusted; they trusted in you ²  and you rescued them.

What we have heard and learned ¹  – that which our ancestors ²  have told us –
