Then the guard ¹  cries out: “On the watchtower, O sovereign master, ²  I stand all day long; at my post I am stationed every night.

For this is what the sovereign master ¹  has told me: “Go, post a guard! He must report what he sees.

Joshua said, “Roll large stones over the mouth of the cave and post guards in front of it. ¹ 

“My days ¹  are swifter than a runner, ²  they speed by without seeing happiness.

If the anger ¹  of the ruler flares up ²  against you, do not resign ³  from your position, ⁴  for a calm ⁵  response ⁶  can undo ⁷  great offenses.

So do this: Dismiss the kings from their command, and replace them with military commanders.

Give the signal to attack Babylon’s wall! ¹  Bring more guards! ²  Post them all around the city! ³  Put men in ambush! ⁴  For the Lord will do what he has planned. He will do what he said he would do to the people of Babylon. ⁵ 

I will stand at my watch post; I will remain stationed on the city wall. ¹  I will keep watching, so I can see what he says to me and can know ²  how I should answer when he counters my argument. ³ 

Shuppim and Hosah were assigned the west gate, along with the Shalleketh gate on the upper road. One guard was adjacent to another. ¹

Again the next day John ¹  was standing there ²  with two of his disciples.
