Since many of them had no desire to eat, ¹  Paul ²  stood up ³  among them and said, “Men, you should have listened to me ⁴  and not put out to sea ⁵  from Crete, thus avoiding ⁶  this damage and loss.

So, my brothers and sisters, ¹  you also died to the law through the body of Christ, so that you could be joined to another, to the one who was raised from the dead, to bear fruit to God. ² 

Until ¹  certain people came from James, he had been eating with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he stopped doing this ²  and separated himself ³  because he was afraid of those who were pro-circumcision. ⁴ 

Brothers and sisters, ¹  if a person ²  is discovered in some sin, ³  you who are spiritual ⁴  restore such a person in a spirit of gentleness. ⁵  Pay close attention ⁶  to yourselves, so that you are not tempted too.

Adulterers, do you not know that friendship with the world means hostility toward God? ¹  So whoever decides to be the world’s friend makes himself God’s enemy.

Later King Jehoshaphat of Judah made an alliance with King Ahaziah of Israel, who ¹  did evil.

For you will have a pact with the stones ¹  of the field, and the wild animals ²  will be at peace ³  with you.

My brothers ¹  have been as treacherous ²  as a seasonal stream, ³  and as the riverbeds of the intermittent streams ⁴  that flow away. ⁵ 

For now ¹  you have become like these streams that are no help; ²  you see a terror, ³  and are afraid.

He returns no more to his house, nor does his place of residence ¹  know him ²  any more.

If he is uprooted ¹  from his place, then that place ²  will disown him, saying, ³  ‘I have never seen you!’

and ¹  he contends with God on behalf of man as a man ²  pleads ³  for his friend.

“He has put my relatives ¹  far from me; my acquaintances only ²  turn away from me.

People ¹  who had seen him will not see him again, and the place where he was will recognize him no longer.

When I went out to the city gate and secured my seat in the public square, ¹ 

Your wickedness affects only ¹  a person like yourself, and your righteousness only other people. ² 

or have wronged my ally, ¹  or helped his lawless enemy, ² 

As for God’s chosen people who are in the land, and the leading officials I admired so much ¹  –

I will declare your name to my countrymen! ¹  In the middle of the assembly I will praise you!
