But Onan knew that the child ¹  would not be considered his. ²  So whenever ³  he had sexual relations with ⁴  his brother’s wife, he withdrew prematurely ⁵  so as not to give his brother a descendant.

May Joab and his descendants be perpetually guilty of their shed blood, but may the Lord give perpetual peace to David, his descendants, his family, ¹  and his dynasty.” ² 

Once he has leveled its surface, does he not scatter the seed of the caraway plant, sow the seed of the cumin plant, and plant the wheat, barley, and grain in their designated places? ¹ 

Certainly ¹  caraway seed is not threshed with a sledge, nor is the wheel of a cart rolled over cumin seed. ²  Certainly caraway seed is beaten with a stick, and cumin seed with a flail.

Their descendants will be known among the nations, their offspring among the peoples. All who see them will recognize that the Lord has blessed them.” ¹ 

And ¹  in that you saw iron mixed with wet clay, so people will be mixed ²  with one another ³  without adhering to one another, just as ⁴  iron does not mix with clay.

I tell you the solemn truth, ¹  unless a kernel of wheat falls into the ground and dies, it remains by itself alone. ²  But if it dies, it produces ³  much grain. ⁴ 

I will give all the land that you see to you and your descendants ¹  forever.

He must not profane his children among his people, ¹  for I am the Lord who sanctifies him.’”

These curses ¹  will be a perpetual sign and wonder with reference to you and your descendants. ² 

You will also know that your children ¹  will be numerous, and your descendants ²  like the grass of the earth.

You destroy their offspring ¹  from the earth, their descendants ²  from among the human race. ³ 

A whole generation ¹  will serve him; they will tell the next generation about the sovereign Lord. ² 

The descendants of his servants will inherit it, and those who are loyal to him ¹  will live in it. ² 

The children of your servants will settle down here, and their descendants ¹  will live securely in your presence.” ² 

Be assured that ¹  the evil person will certainly be punished, ²  but the descendants of the righteous ³  will not suffer unjust judgment. ⁴ 

Does a farmer just keep on plowing at planting time? ¹  Does he keep breaking up and harrowing his ground?

“You, my servant Israel, Jacob whom I have chosen, offspring of Abraham my friend, ¹ 

All the descendants of Israel will be vindicated by the Lord and will boast in him. ¹ 

But approach, you sons of omen readers, you offspring of adulteresses and prostitutes! ¹
