The nations will hear of your devastating defeat. ¹  your cries of distress will echo throughout the earth. In the panic of their flight one soldier will trip over another and both of them will fall down defeated.” ² 

They do not pray to me, ¹  but howl in distress on their beds; They slash themselves ²  for grain and new wine, but turn away from me.

and has a reputation for good works: as one who has raised children, ¹  practiced hospitality, washed the feet of the saints, helped those in distress – as one who has exhibited all kinds of good works. ² 

‘I know the distress you are suffering ¹  and your poverty (but you are rich). I also know ²  the slander against you ³  by those who call themselves Jews and really are not, but are a synagogue ⁴  of Satan.

“You saw the affliction of our ancestors in Egypt, and you heard their cry at the Red Sea. ¹ 

Why is light given ¹  to a man ²  whose way is hidden, ³  and whom God has hedged in? ⁴

Why, Lord, do you stand far off? Why do you pay no attention during times of trouble? ² 

The godly ¹  cry out and the Lord hears; he saves them from all their troubles. ² 

Come near me and redeem me! ¹  Because of my enemies, rescue me!

I am oppressed and suffering! O God, deliver and protect me! ¹ 

You will be overcome by ¹  drunkenness and sorrow. The cup of your sister Samaria is a cup of horror and desolation.

The Lord is good ¹  – indeed, ²  he is a fortress ³  in time of distress, ⁴  and he protects ⁵  those who seek refuge ⁶  in him.

But when the young man heard this he went away sorrowful, for he was very rich. ¹ 

He took Peter, James, ¹  and John with him, and became very troubled and distressed.

I have a baptism ¹  to undergo, ²  and how distressed I am until it is finished!

At times you were publicly exposed to abuse and afflictions, and at other times you came to share with others who were treated in that way.

Indeed ¹  Israel ²  is the vineyard of the Lord who commands armies, the people ³  of Judah are the cultivated place in which he took delight. He waited for justice, but look what he got – disobedience! ⁴  He waited for fairness, but look what he got – cries for help! ⁵ 

They put it on their shoulder and carry it; they put it in its place and it just stands there; it does not ¹  move from its place. Even when someone cries out to it, it does not reply; it does not deliver him from his distress.
