But Jesus ¹  gently took her by the hand and said, ²  “Child, get up.”

(Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.) ¹ 

Thus the people who had come to mourn ¹  said, “Look how much he loved him!”

“Brothers and fathers, listen to my defense ¹  that I now ²  make to you.”

So then, my brothers and sisters, ¹  when you come together to eat, wait for one another.

But you, ¹  brothers and sisters, ²  are children of the promise like Isaac.

Therefore, brothers and sisters, ¹  we are not children of the slave woman but of the free woman.

For there is no one here like him who will readily demonstrate his deep concern for you. ¹ 

For you yourselves know, brothers and sisters, ¹  about our coming to you – it has not proven to be purposeless. ² 

But you, brothers and sisters, ¹  do not grow weary in doing what is right.

So you, my child, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

My brothers and sisters, ¹  consider it nothing but joy ²  when you fall into all sorts of trials,

Therefore do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, ¹  if the world hates you. ² 

He said, “May you be rewarded ¹  by the Lord, my dear! ²  This act of devotion ³  is greater than what you did before. ⁴  For you have not sought to marry ⁵  one of the young men, whether rich or poor. ⁶ 

Now, my dear, don’t worry! ¹  I intend to do for you everything you propose, ²  for everyone in the village ³  knows that you are a worthy woman. ⁴ 

Saul replied, “I have sinned. Come back, my son David. I won’t harm you, for you treated my life with value ¹  this day. I have behaved foolishly and have made a very terrible mistake!” ² 

In the same way that I valued your life this day, ¹  may the Lord value my life ²  and deliver me from all danger.”

Let none who rely on you be disgraced because of me, O sovereign Lord and king! ¹  Let none who seek you be ashamed because of me, O God of Israel!

So I said, ¹  “Oh, my dear people, ²  put on sackcloth and roll in ashes. Mourn with painful sobs as though you had lost your only child. For any moment now ³  that destructive army ⁴  will come against us.”

The Lord continued, ¹  “In every town in the land I will purge them like straw blown away by the wind. ²  I will destroy my people. I will kill off their children. I will do so because they did not change their behavior. ³
