Moses assembled the whole community of the Israelites and said to them, “These are the things that the Lord has commanded you to do. ¹ 

Priests ¹  must not have a bald spot shaved on their head, they must not shave the corner of their beard, and they must not cut slashes in their body. ² 

There will be one regulation ¹  for you, whether a foreigner or a native citizen, for I am the Lord your God.’”

“‘If your brother becomes impoverished with regard to you so that he sells himself to you, you must not subject him to slave service. ¹ 

He must be with the one who bought him ¹  like a yearly hired worker. ²  The one who bought him ³  must not rule over him harshly in your sight.

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Number all the firstborn males of the Israelites from a month old and upward, and take ¹  the number of their names.

They said to the whole community of the Israelites, “The land we passed through to investigate is an exceedingly ¹  good land.

And the whole community ¹  of the Israelites and the resident foreigner who lives among them will be forgiven, since all the people were involved in the unintentional offense.

But on the next day the whole community of Israelites murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the Lord’s people!” ¹ 

The Israelites took the women of Midian captives along with their little ones, and took all their herds, all their flocks, and all their goods as plunder.

No inheritance may pass from tribe to tribe. But every one of the tribes of the Israelites must retain its inheritance.”

Therefore Levi has no allotment or inheritance ¹  among his brothers; ²  the Lord is his inheritance just as the Lord your God told him.

The judges will thoroughly investigate the matter, and if the witness should prove to be false and to have given false testimony against the accused, ¹ 

The judge ¹  may sentence him to forty blows, ²  but no more. If he is struck with more than these, you might view your fellow Israelite ³  with contempt.

The king of Jericho received this report: “Note well! ¹  Israelite men have come here tonight ²  to spy on the land.”

The Levites received within the land owned by the Israelites ¹  forty-eight cities in all and their grazing areas.

When the Israelites heard this, the entire Israelite community assembled at Shiloh to launch an attack against them. ¹ 

The Reubenites, Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered the leaders ¹  of the Israelite clans:

The tribes of Israel sent men throughout the tribe ¹  of Benjamin, saying, “How could such a wicked thing take place? ² 

The Benjaminites attacked from Gibeah and struck down twenty-two thousand Israelites that day. ¹
