“All Israel has broken ¹  your law and turned away by not obeying you. ²  Therefore you have poured out on us the judgment solemnly threatened ³  in the law of Moses the servant of God, for we have sinned against you. ⁴ 

But Abram replied to the king of Sodom, “I raise my hand ¹  to the Lord, the Most High God, Creator of heaven and earth, and vow ² 

Jacob ¹  said, “Swear to me that you will do so.” ²  So Joseph ³  gave him his word. ⁴  Then Israel bowed down ⁵  at the head of his bed. ⁶ 

‘Because the Lord was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to them, he killed them in the wilderness.’

He delivered us from there so that he could give us the land he had promised our ancestors.

How can we find wives for those who are left? ¹  After all, we took an oath in the Lord’s name not to give them our daughters as wives.”

But Saul swore an oath to her by the Lord, “As surely as the Lord lives, you will not incur guilt in this matter!”

He despises a reprobate, ¹  but honors the Lord’s loyal followers. ²  He makes firm commitments and does not renege on his promise. ³ 

The Lord makes this promise on oath ¹  and will not revoke it: ²  “You are an eternal priest ³  after the pattern of ⁴  Melchizedek.” ⁵ 

So this is what the sovereign Lord says: I vow ¹  that the nations around you will endure insults as well.

But I say to you, do not take oaths at all – not by heaven, because it is the throne of God,

Although it grieved the king, ¹  because of his oath and the dinner guests he commanded it to be given.

Although it grieved the king deeply, ¹  he did not want to reject her request because of his oath and his guests.

May the God of Abraham and the god of Nahor, ¹  the gods of their father, judge between us.” Jacob took an oath by the God whom his father Isaac feared. ² 

Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph ¹  had made the Israelites solemnly swear, ²  “God will surely attend ³  to you, and you will carry ⁴  my bones up from this place with you.”

“Everything devoted ¹  in Israel will be yours.

Gedaliah took an oath so as to give them and their troops some assurance of safety. ¹  He said, “You don’t need to be afraid to submit to the Babylonian officials. Settle down in the land and submit to the king of Babylon. Then things will go well for you.”

He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him vow allegiance ¹  in the name of God. He was stubborn and obstinate, and refused to return ²  to the Lord God of Israel.

So King Zedekiah made a secret promise to Jeremiah and sealed it with an oath. He promised, ¹  “As surely as the Lord lives who has given us life and breath, ²  I promise you this: I will not kill you or hand you over to those men who want to kill you.” ³ 

Where are your earlier faithful deeds, ¹  O Lord, ²  the ones performed in accordance with your reliable oath to David? ³
