for I rescued the poor who cried out for help, and the orphan who ¹  had no one to assist him;

I go about blackened, ¹  but not by the sun; in the assembly I stand up and cry for help.

“People ¹  cry out because of the excess of oppression; ²  they cry out for help because of the power ³  of the mighty. ⁴ 

To the Lord I cried out, ¹  and he answered me from his holy hill. ²  (Selah)

Turn back from me, all you who behave wickedly, ¹  for the Lord has heard the sound of my weeping! ² 

They cry out, but there is no one to help them; ¹  they cry out to the Lord, ²  but he does not answer them.

When I refused to confess my sin, ¹  my whole body wasted away, ²  while I groaned in pain all day long.

The godly ¹  cry out and the Lord hears; he saves them from all their troubles. ² 

But then the Lord awoke from his sleep; ¹  he was like a warrior in a drunken rage. ² 

indeed, if ¹  you call out for ²  discernment ³  – raise your voice ⁴  for understanding –

Discipline your child, for ¹  there is hope, but do not set your heart ²  on causing his death. ³ 

Even now you say to me, ‘You are my father! ¹  You have been my faithful companion ever since I was young.

My heart is crushed because my dear people ¹  are being crushed. ²  I go about crying and grieving. I am overwhelmed with dismay. ³ 

Yes, ¹  here is what he says: “You hear cries of panic and of terror; there is no peace in sight. ² 

From that time Jesus began to preach this message: ¹  “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

He answered, ¹  “I tell you, if they ²  keep silent, the very stones ³  will cry out!”

But they were insistent, ¹  demanding with loud shouts that he be crucified. And their shouts prevailed.

For in this earthly house ¹  we groan, because we desire to put on ²  our heavenly dwelling,

Come now, you rich! Weep and cry aloud ¹  over the miseries that are coming on you.

Then ¹  the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn for her because no one buys their cargo ²  any longer –
